Sir Mix-a-Pop

This company is all about having fun. Bringing in the fun prints and colors of the 80s with the delicious tastes of popular mixed drinks.

Starting Out

When I first received the assignment to create a high-end alcoholic beverage, my mind went a million miles a minute. I first thought to make a mixed drink beverage. Originally, my direction was a vintage look with the name Sir Pops-a-Lot. The brand would include vintage flavors: Old Fashioned, Grasshopper, Irish Coffee, Mint Julep, and the like. A high end alcoholic beverage with a vintage twist

I primarily drew inspiration for my sketches from mid-century modern architecture and furniture, while the logo aimed to incorporate the idea of a monocle and/or bowler cap. However, as my sketches developed, my ideas drastically changed, changing from 50s-60s to 80s pop.

Going all the way

Sometimes it is essential to fully immerse yourself in an idea. While developing Sir Mix-a-Pop, I listened to my favorite 80s pop station on Pandora. I looked up patterns from the late 80s and early 90s: Blossom, Family Matters, Saved by the Bell, Clarissa Knows It All, Fresh Prince, TLC, Lisa Frank, and anything that reminded me of that terrible winter jacket/windbreaker I wore that looked like scraps of 12 different fabrics all sewn together.

All patterns had to be bright but still relate to the flavors in the bottle. The flavors were supposed to be fun, bright flavored, and could theoretically taste good and sell well.

Merchandise

Sir Mix-a-Pop is not just a drink -- it’s selling a lifestyle. The company brings a sense of 80s into the 2010s as it infuses the current popularity of exclusive handmade cocktails with retro colors and nostalgic prints. The aim of bringing these elements together was entice those non-hipster millennials to enjoy their youth without it tasting like mustache oil, patchouli, or pretentiousness. To capture that feeling, I used the brand’s patterns on items they might use with a neutral backdrop of black to keep the colors fresh and vibrant.
